Last evening I had a discussion with one of my husband's friends. He was informed that I was a "Sarah Palin, Glenn Beck lover" - which is not entirely true but in any case he felt the need to tell me why I was incorrect.
I told him I prefer listening to what Limbaugh has to say more so than those two and he immediately went into a tirade about drug addiction and prostitutes. It was clear that Limbaugh scares him, as does Palin (who I admitted I would've voted for full steam ahead in 2008 if she was the presidential candidate). I explained how Glenn Beck's shows from a year or two ago were slowly coming true. Sadly when he demanded examples I wasn't able to think of them quickly enough (having a DJ blaring Justin Bieber in the background wasn't exactly helping my thought process either. I always relate back to Sarah Palin's "what supreme court cases most affected you" question from Katie Couric a few years back when I can't immediately access my past memories to grab small details quickly - there's a lot of stuff in our brains and sometimes we just can't think quick enough on our feet).
I informed him that while I like Sarah's principles, she's by far turning into a divider more so than a uniter. If we need anything in this conntry right now, it's a uniter. I'm willing to compromise a few of my beliefs to vote for a candidate who is best at bringing people together in 2012. We need to stop fighting and get down to the business of saving our country from depression, long-term decline, and major debt.
I am really excited to see what Herman Cain has to offer the 2012 presidential field. I will not vote for Palin. I will not vote for Romney. I would pick Libertarian or other third party candidate over them at this point. I like Huckabee a lot but I think he may turn off a lot of people with his ultra strong Evangelical beliefs. I absolutely hate saying something like that, but it's how I feel at this point. However, he would be an EXCELLENT VP candidate along someone the likes of Cain, or possibly Gingrich.
Back to liberal talking points... while debating with my husband's friend, he brought up how Republicans hate big government but we got into two wars under Bush. I kindly explained that Bush was not at all a fiscal conservative his last term, how 99% of the public supported the wars (though he claims he did not support them from the get go- if this is true, I think that is quite impressive), and how the government provides for common defense in our constitution and at that time to defend America we had to go hunt down terrorists who killed 3,000+ innocent people.
I told him I just had no idea how he stood for what he did, and how I could not at all see where he was coming from. He shared the same feeling with me. Then we talked about our dogs. This is how political discourse should be. Hard hitting, but argue your points and move on if the other side won't listen.
It will be interesting how things shake out the next few months here. I hope the conservatives stay on track and continue to cut spending. That's what we sent them for, and they shouldn't worry that the democrats will slander them all day long and berate them for "not caring" about every group and sec of the country. We the people who voted understand the task at hand. Cut, cut cut until you can't cut no more. I hope that the next time I hear someone whine about how the services that "are being cut by mean republicans" that I have the strength to explain to them, exactly, how much FOURTEEN TRILLION DOLLARS is. Especially the people crying about NPR. Good grief, why in the world is this station still around on our dime? If they can't succeed on their own, then they ought to go out of business. That's how the market works, federal government. Get a clue.
My husband and I make well under $100,000 combined. However we live BELOW our means so we can afford our house payment, our cars, and fund our retirement while still having the extra dollar or two for entertainment. It's really not that difficult if you start with only what you need, and stop before you ever get to 'wants.' Yes, I want a DVR. I loved my 3 month free DVR trial. But I don't want to pay another $6 a month for it, so it's gone. I really, really, hope and pray the government continues down the same slash and cut path.
